Paintball Velocity

As a safety caution, paintball guns must not shoot the paintballs that exceed a defined velocity. The manufacturing standard for maximum velocity for protected is 300fps. Any velocity exceeding this amount can severely injure other players.

Many designated paintball fields require a lower velocity around 280fps with the muzzle energy of roughly 11 joules in order to make an extra padding of safety. Because being hit by paintballs can hurt at a short distance, players have developed a surrender rule where a player is out if the opponent yells, “surrender” at a close distance.

Paintball velocity is measured using a chronograph. Chronographs are usual equipment at commercial paintball fields, but should be acquired if not playing at a commercial site. Players who engage in recreation without initial using a chronograph position themselves and other players at jeopardy.
